Well I went to see a neurosurgeon yesterday about my chronic back pain. The news was not encouraging.

It seems that I have an advanced degenerative disk at L5-S1 that is causing all of the problems. The two vertebrae are nearly bone on bone, no wonder it hurts. Old Sawbones told me that there are a few options. One is disk replacement however the hospital he works for doesn’t allow this type surgery.

Secondly he could do a fusion. Trouble with this option is he could not guarantee it would eliminate the pain, might even make it worse. Also he said this option carries the risk of putting pressure on other areas of my back which in turn could lead to back pain in those areas. Freaking H&ll!

The last option and the one I am probably going to go with is do nothing for now. The pain is tolerable and I really don’t like surgery very much.

BTW, I asked about steroid shots and he said that wouldn’t do a bit of good. So there you have it. I must be falling apart at the seams?

Fender.
Walking through my favorite neighborhood here and just wanted to share a cup of coffee and any sort of experience I might have..I work in the field of short term disability and through my experience...you want to get as far away from fusion as you can....most people need further accompany surgeries years or sometimes months later ... and NO, it doesnt seem to eliminate the pain.
Disc replacement does seem to do alot of good not for the long haul but at least for 5- 10 years...
Just thought I would chime in ...I will go to my luke warm cup of coffee....peace

Whapu, thanks for dropping by and especially for the info on fusion. I figured as much and that is why I am not hot to trot on letting anyone cut on me.

Hey everyone. I hope you guys had a good weekend, I know I did.

My coffee is hot and good this morning so let's get this day in gear.

Hey HS, I haven't asked about a referral to a chiropractor yet but I will.

Thanks I need it to get me going! I had thought I would have my bedroom back last night but not the case and I'm getting tired of my sofa!

I just have to post this. HS, my friend and I got the volvo running yesterday. I cannot tell you have happy I was for that thing to start. I was worried sick, the dual overhead cam set up on that thing is one of the most complicated things I have worked in, and I am an aircraft weapons mechanic. Anyway I thought you would like to hear we got her going.
