Okay, so I skipped this last Monday - after coming back from the Virgin Islands and several fabulous restaurant meals, I wasn't brave enough to step on that scale.

This morning, though, I was - 166.5 lbs! Finally, a slight move down from 168. I would like to see it again on another day before I trust it's real, but I did adjust my thyroid hormone up a little bit 3 weeks ago, so hopefully this is a sign it is starting to kick in???

That is great! I hope you had a fabulous vacation. I am down to 164, I'm just looking at maybe another 20 to 25 to go.

I expect to do that this year, and maybe we could both get our leather mini-skirts.

Leather minis for Christmas? I'm there!!!!

It's such a tangle, this thyroid stuff. If you just looked at my numbers, you'd say I should be fine - but obviously I wasn't, if I could exercise and eat 1500 calories a day for 2 months and not lose a pound!!! And for me, oddly enough, my symptoms when low and high were somewhat similar, so I always worried about taking too much. I think, however, this shows that I need to push those doses up to the edge.

At the beginning of last week I was up to 69 kilos, but being that time of the month, I promptly lost 2 kilos, apparently, in two days!

So, the weight is the same, at 67, but I have been keeping up with the morning exercise routine and even bought little weights to strap onto my wrists or ankles, and I am rather less flappy and flabby, at least! Not so YUCKY in the mirror!

Also, I am winding down some of the not-so-good items in my cupboards and fridge, to make way for the better stuff!

And now for an earlyish night, to help banish the rings under my eyes - be gone with you!

Ellie -

Could you have just been eating too little? Like, 1500 would definitely be fewer calories than I probably should ever have (on charts I read, for my activity level, I'll probably always be in the 1800 range, no less than 1700). I don't know anything about thyroids, I just know sometimes that people eat too little and don't lose.

I definitely wouldn't mind getting a leather mini for Christmas! I mean, I'll need to buy SOME sort of clothes, I keep having to get rid of them! (I do buy mega-clearanced items as I get smaller, I just finally was able to wear a pair of pants I bought last year for .50 at Bealls Outlet!)

Pants for 50 cents? Girl, you are MY kind of shopper!!!!

No, I don't think I was eating too little. I had gradually decreased my calories over 2 months, nothing abrupt, so I should have been losing sometime in there. Plus I know from past experience that usually (ie when my thyroid isn't completely whacked out) 1500 -1700 calories is about what it takes for me to lose. Plus it was a pretty healthy, balanced, nutritious 1500 calories.

Hmmmmm..... black or red leather do you think???????

Black, I think for me! It goes with everything! Brown would be okay too.

I love getting a good deal on clothes - I just pick up items as I find them (.50 was really cheap, I wish I found more of those!) That trip, I got 3 pants for less than $10.00 (one of the pairs was $2.00, and another was a little more).
I love buying smaller clothes!

I hope the Thyroid medication works well for you!

TC, just curious, what are you taking for adrenal support, and what testing did you do?

Ellie

Hi Ellie,
I thought I'd answer/continue this convo here on your thread. Hope you don't mind?

I have had both blood tests AND saliva tests done for hormone/adrenal testing. The blood tests did not show any problems with my cortisol or DHEA. The saliva tests DID. I became very confused and began doing more of my own research. After reading many books, visting many thyroid BB's I discovered that the adrenal/thyroid connection goes hand in hand much of the time. Many people find that they are not feeling better on their thyroid meds until they add the additional adrenal supplementation. I tried it for a week and was amazed.

That all said, I currently am only on IsoCort. This is considered to be a very light supplementation. There are many people that supplement (on their own) with the "real" stuff. I am way too nervous about burning my adrenal's out totally to try that.

Hope this answers your questions. Since you are a (doctor/nurse?.. did I understand that correctly? ) do you have any thoughts about this?

I'm an M.D. Adrenals are such a confused area. After all, we know autoimmune disease is the cause of most cases of Addison's disease (adrenal failure) in this country, and that there is a somewhat higher risk if you have another autoimmune disease like thyroid disease. Still, true Addison's disease is rare.

It seems likely, of course, that just as in thyroid disease, there would be subclinical cases of Addison's in which there are adrenal antibodies, and decreased adrenal function, without full-blown Addison's disease - and current mainstream medical practice doesn't really address identifying those people, as anti-adrenal antibody tests aren't widely used and normal ranges for cortisol and DHEA levels are wide. Saliva tests are widely touted by alternative practitioners but considered by many to be inaccurate.

It is known that low thyroid can result in decreased adrenal function, which improves upon replacement of thyroid hormone. Perhaps for some people that improvement takes a while?

I admit to being uncomfortable with the current fad that "if you're tired, it must be your adrenals" - but at the same time, it is clear from the bbs that many people find relief of their symptoms with treatment. Are these subclinical cases of Addison's? Or some other process that just improves with increased cortisol, just like using prednisone for arthritis?

And of course, there is a theoretical worry about people who don't need steroids taking them and suppressing their adrenal glands, and then not being able to make enough adrenal steroids if they stop their supplements. This is what can happen when people take Prednisone chronically. Alternative practitioners claim it won't happen with the low doses people use to supplement for adrenal fatigue, but I'd sure like to see a study on it. To be safe, I think anyone taking it should taper off slowly if they go off it.

I'm curious, which symptoms of your were relieved when you started taking the Isocort?
