Had a lovely evening out with H and D last night. It was a fundraising dinner to support Surfaid International, a wonderful group that is working to defeat malaria in the Mentawai Islands of Indonesia. Offshore boat trips are a favorite international surf destination, but the people on the islands suffer from hyperendemic malaria - in some places 50% of children die before age 5 from malaria and other preventable diseases. The doctor who started this nonprofit organization has turned to surfers and the surf industry to fund their efforts.

It was a great group of people, and my D really enjoyed the evening. She donated all of the charity money she has saved from her allowance to buy 5 courses of anti-malarial drugs.

If anyone's interested, their website is www.surfaidinternational.org

PMA boost for the week -

I went out to dinner with my H last week, and before dinner, we stopped to check the surf. A few of the guys were there, and one of them was taking some photos of the sunset, and he took a picture of H and me. I was wearing black pants and a pink knit top (dfb knows the one - great minds shop alike ) that shows off my Victoria's-Secret-enhanced cleavage.

Well, H ran into the same guy this weekend, he told H he'd gotten a nice shot of us together. Then he said "Don't take this the wrong way, man, but your wife is HOT!"

In the "It's Always Something" file -
S17 woke up this morning with appendicitis! He's in the hospital now waiting his turn for the OR - my H is with him, I'm briefly at home getting some things he want. He was nice enough to have a completely textbook presentation, so the diagnosis was easy to make. I missed D13's 8th grade graduation taking him to the ER - H and my mom went, though.

Gotta run!

Thanks guys
S17 is fine. After a long day waiting for an OR slot, they finally took his appendix out around 7 P.M. - the actual surgery took no time at all (they do it laparascopically these days) and he was home in his own bed before 11 P.M. !

S17 was a trooper - he's usually my wimpy one, but he was very brave all day. He did have a moment before he went in to surgery though when he wanted to tell me who to give all his video games and anime to if he died.

Today he's eating jello and able to get up on his own. He's a little sore but really not too bad.

He really had a completely textbook case. When he woke up yesterday morning, I noticed he was belching a lot. I asked him if he was okay, and he said his stomach hurt a little, and pointed to the area around his belly button. (For some reason, people with appendicitis often first "feel" the pain there, even though they are tender to touch over the appendix in the right lower quadrant). Sure enough, I laid him down and mashed on his belly, and he winced when I got to the right lower quadrant, right ove McBurney's point (about two-thirds of the way up a line drawn from the hip bone to the belly button). I knew that second that he had appendicitis (I used to work in urgent care, where I would see two or three cases of early appendicitis every month).

What a surreal way to start your day! I'm just glad he didn't do this while we were on vacation - we're supposed to leave on Wednesday.

Ellie
