PP....thank you for being so generous with your expertise. I want to tone, everything. Had twins and bellys never been the same...but overall tone. Is that what you say is getting in shape and requires training? What kind of training?

And I want to lose 30 lbs. And that is diet and cardio, yes?

Thanks again Julie and PP

Hey, count me in!

The fastest way for me to lose weight was of course the D diet. But now that this diet is no longer working a few minths post-D, I need to start walking again and cutting down on carbs to fit into the many teeny skirts and shorts I bought in the throes of my misery.

I am in! I want to lose 5 or 6 lbs but mostly just firm up. My belly is way too soft and I am very weak. Was thinking of starting couch to 5k - shouldn't be too hard as I walk most mornings for 3 miles already. But it got really cold out this week and I hate the cold. Does walking/jogging "in place" count? I have poor tolerance to cold weather, maybe I should just invest in a treadmill. But then I have no place to put it.

For Jpeg, if she is here, I LOVE hot yoga, I used to do hot vinyasa. I have a CD called PiYo that I do at home (or rather I should do at home) that is really good.

fo, I used to do yoga and pilates in my twenties but now my joints are just too stiff. Maybe I should ease back into them.

My instructor last year wasn't very good and I hurt my knee in one of the positions.

Rain75 if belly is not the same after pregnancy get checked for a diastasis recti. These are even found 10 years after preganancy in a lot of female back patients! You can actually check yourself. if you have small one nothing dangerous but there are certain exercises you would want to avoid (like sit ups and crunches) working lower abdominals CORRECTLY is crucial. I notice a lot of women in the pilates courses are doing exercises that they are not quite ready for. If your belly bulges when you do them, you are not doing correctly. Best bet is to find women's health physical therapist that works a lot with postpartum population. You end up more susceptible to injuries when you have a lot of pelvic instability.

GRlonfr: good instructors are so important and hard to come by! LOL about the D diet. I lost more weight on this then I did for my wedding! I love it, but it will be hard to maintain unless I start doing something now. You know what's funny though, I was actually jealous of all the women I work with and my friends that have some excess weight because I thought to myself "sigh they must be really happy"

Julie, I had 3 c-sections and my stomach has never been the same. Not that it was flat before the babies, lol, but I think its hopeless now.

Fo2. I really don't think it's hopeless at all. I think most women have that problem after kids and it's never too late. Just tons of core stabilization (pelvic floor stuff works too) and making sure your performing exercises correctly. Then the cardio and diet which is crucial for weight loss.

JellyB. I don't have background in exercise physiology geared for weight loss, just for rehab...but I just watched some of those kettle bell classes on you tube. Just like with cross fit, I think you would need to have a really great instructor because unless you had exceptional core stability starting out I can see how easy it would be to compensate and injure yourself. I was pretty athletic prior to kids and have a pretty extensive background and very good body awareness and I don't think I would be able to perform those exercises correctly at the pace I was observing the classes are run. What seems good though is that it's a lot of multiplaner functional movement patterns and eccentric loading. That's just my opinion though.

Jelly B when you exercise do you monitor and maintain heart rate at appropriate levels for the recommended duration? I think it's as simple as that. personally I would do this and just change it up. Make sure it's things that are fun to you. Swimming, biking, speed walking, dancing.

Pig pen what are your thoughts?

Julie, thanks, you are motivating me.

I am making an exercise plan. Thinking: continue with my 3 mile daily walk (trying to come up with a backup plan for cold days) and add some running to it so that it is a combination walk/run.

Then add yoga 3-4 x per week, I have the DVD's just not the motivation but I always feel better after I do it. I will focus on correct technique for core exercises.

As far as nutrition, I need to reduce my processed carbs. I eat pretty well but could improve. Maybe I will try paleo, even if I do it 80% of the time. I am in a weekly dinner group and go to lunch with friends once a week or so, and want to be able to eat what everyone else is eating when I go out, but if I could do paleo at home that would help me clean up my diet. I am pretty close, just really need a better breakfast and snacks. Is hummus paleo?

I don't know know about hummus. I feel like it's a healthy fat and has protein so I eat it. I like the home made ones better then that processed taste you get from the Saba brands, I don't like to eat meat, so I could never survive on paleo diet like that.

Just do your yoga cd now and I am going to gym shortly while kids are in school! We have to develop habits lol.

Now this is a thread I can get behind! I love exercise... it is a drug and my main coping mechanism. I worked out hard before we got together. Then we worked out together, still good, but not my ideal workout.. now it is back to hitting it hard. I am trying to gain weight. I have gained 10 lbs so far sine BD with another 5 to go. Maybe I'll get into personal training at some point.. who knows.

The thing I want to try is yoga. Being a male, I admit I am intimidated by it a bit. Not quite sure how to ease into it. I certainly do not want to go to a class and be the only male.

Habit is the key Julie! Us dumb humans stick to habits. Once you pick it up, it is hard to stop. I see the same people at the gym every night and a different set on weekends.
