GBO -
my son has a really deep, manly-sounding voice - maybe we could have him answer the phone when your H calls

Just got a phone call from an old high school friend. He had called my H's office yesterday and left a message (he'd lost our home phone number) and we've played phone tag since. The message was that he was going to be in town Friday and wanted to get together. Well, H is out of town on an annual boy's ski trip, but I'd love to see my friend - he and I have known each other since we were freshmen in high school, were part of a tight-knit group of friends, who stayed friends for many years afterwards, although contact has been less frequent in the past few years.

Anyway - after playing phone tag we finally spoke tonite, and made arrangements to meet for lunch Friday (he's a pilot, has a one-day turn-around in my city). At the end of the convo, I said to give my regards to his W (they've been married longer than my H and I, and have three great kids each exactly one year older than my three). And here's the "oh no" part - his response to the "give my regards" was - well - guarded.

Is it wrong of me to hope that maybe she has some serious health problem, or got called back to active duty in Iraq, rather than one of them is having a MLC???? HE better not be having a MLC, or I'll kick his butt - I always liked his wife, and thought she was well-suited to him.

So - what started off looking as a great chance to catch up with an old friend - now I'm worried about what I'll hear. Hence the title - I HOPE I'M WRONG!!!!

Ellie, if your worst thoughts are correct about your friend, I'd love to be the fly on the wall watching you kick his butt ... hoping it's nothing of course.

So if your S18 answers the phone up here, would that make him San Diego Mystery Man?

LOL!!!! Definitely!

And yes, you better believe, if my friend is the one having the MLC, he'll get an earful from me! I'd say it's probably the wife, because he never seemed the type - Eagle Scout, straight arrow, family man - but then, one thing I've learned here, is there is no "type"! And he IS a pilot, so there's always that troubling little factor called "opportunity". Throw in a big career change a few years ago (retired from military, went to commercial airlines)...and, well, who knows.

But then, here I am, violating one of my own rules and borrowing trouble. Maybe there's nothing to it at all. Or maybe the answer is simple - like - his wife's in Iraq.

I'll let you all know on Friday.

Hi Ellie,

Here's hoping you're wrong!

I wanted to say thanks for the book recommendations a while back... I finished Smart Women... and The Power of Focus... loved them both. Not sure how I missed the latter one--it seems like something I would have read by now.

Anyway... thanks. Your suggestions-- no surprise-- were really helpful!

Me too! I'm reading Smart Women right now and find Bach to be easy reading (though his assignments are tough).

I'm reading H2H's suggested reading now--What Could He Be Thinking? Another really great book.

When are we going to exhaust all the reference materials in the Self Help section?

Yup. Had lunch with my friend today, and the instincts were right - trouble in paradise. Spent several hours talking with him, and drove him to the bookstore to buy a copy of The Five love Languages before I dropped him at his hotel (did I mention I can be pushy? ).

No affairs yet (that I could tell - didn't ask) but definitely one of those bad downward spirals going on. Maybe complicated by some untreated anxiety disorder on his wife's part. I also recommended that he secretly read DR - bookstore was out (how dare they???).

Let's hope some of my hard-won education in marriage can help him.
