For over 3 decades, Michele has been specializing in helping people avoid unnecessary divorce and fall in love again. In fact, she has been the go-to couples counselor for on-the- brink marriages in need of major relationship help.
People often ask Michele why she decided to become a “Divorce Buster.” She tells them, “I didn’t choose my career, my career chose me.” There is a reason for her passion.
“Among the first in her field to courageously speak out about the pitfalls of unnecessary divorce, Michele has been active in spearheading the now popular movement urging couples to work hard to make their marriages work.”
A Child of Divorce
“My childhood was blissful. My two brothers and I had two very loving and devoted parents. I have warm memories of holidays and regular weekend get-togethers with extended family, family vacations and laughter at home. In fact, unlike some of my friends’ parents, my parents never fought.
And then one fateful day, my mother sat all five of us down and announced that, after 23 years of what seemed like a perfect marriage, she wanted a divorce. In addition to being totally shocked, without question, that was the saddest day of my life.
I quickly learned that children have no veto power in a decision that affects them for the rest of their lives. My family, as I knew it, would never be the same.
My parents’ divorce left an irreparable hole in my heart. It made me determined to spend the rest of my life helping people fight for their marriages and families.
It also made me determined to learn everything I could about healthy relationships to make my own marriage work. I’m proud to say that, unlike many other experts in the field, my husband, Jim and I have been married for over 40 years! It isn’t easy, but we feel enormous gratitude about being able to gloat over our two grown children and their families… together.” – Michele Weiner-Davis
Michele’s Professional Background
Michele obtained her M.S.W degree from the University of Kansas. She received post-graduate training at a world-renowned clinic – The Brief Family Therapy Center- and was introduced to a groundbreaking therapy model- Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
SFBT is completely different from traditional therapy; instead of spending months or years determining why you have a problem, it focuses on the exact steps you need to take today to solve your problem. It’s a down-to-earth, blame-free approach.
She was so impressed with the results of this new method that she became part of the SFBT team that ultimately developed the therapy model used today by therapists all over the world! Starting in the mid-1980’s, Michele spent a great deal of time on the road teaching other therapists this cutting-edge approach.
But soon thereafter, she wanted to spread the word about this revolutionary method to people who needed it most- couples with marriage problems. That’s when Michele wrote her best-selling, self-help book, Divorce Busting. Word about her unique approach to couples therapy spread like wildfire.
As a result, Michele has been a frequent guest on shows such as Oprah, 20/20, The TODAY show, Good Morning America, 48 Hours, CBS This Morning, CNN, CBS Evening News and her work has been showcased in most major newspapers and magazines such as USA TODAY, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, TIME and Newsweek. She has also been a blogger for the Huffingtonpost.com and Psychologytoday.com.
