I love that your students find you you cute! That is right on and true. You are cute and you have a great personality to go with it.

It is nice to have some outside compliments because sometimes we need that.

Fig,
I think it's great that the kids like you. I think back on the teachers I had and the ones that come to mind as being great are the ones who interacted with me, the ones who made the classes fun..

the rest

well they just showed up and made the time suck.
Posted By: fig Re: as a fashion icon - 09/11/08 05:33 PM
i hate sucking time

blech

this year I am trying to interact less with the teachers in the staff room

that was were all the discension was in my old school
and
there are always spies

(paranoia)

i like my job and love the area

so

i am placing my people pleasing assets in my classroom at lunch and only going in for brief snatches

i know the teachers less but

Fig,
I teach high school also. I have one student who Aspergers. One day in class the young man was talking to me and this is the conversation we had a week ago.

Student - Mrs.R, you know what I'd like to see?
Me - What would you like to see V?
Student- A really hot girl topless
Me - (Trying to act like it's no big deal he said this) V, I really don't think this is a appropriate conversation to be having at school.
Student - (very sincere) It's not? Okay, I didn't know that.

While this conversation is going on the boys are snickering.
Student - D, why are you laughing, wouldn't you like to see a hot girl topless?

I sure wish I had written down all the funny things I had witnessed the 22 years I've been teaching!

Hey Fig,

Smart move to avoid the politics at work. I'm doing the same - focusing on my students and keeping the lowdown otherwise. I'm waaay less stressed as a result.

I'm assuming the topless comment was during a bio or physiology class? Perfectly understandable... \:D Give the young man 2 stickers for honesty.

I could add a lot here but for some reason today I feel like just being nice!

Morning Ms fig,

You know I always thought of myself as a fashion icon. I don't mean because I spent a lot of money on clothes but I do have an eye for trends and so does the youngest child of the corn. That was supposed to be what I was going to school for but somewhere I got sidetracked. We believe in accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

Anyway, glad that the hormonal surge is out today. Maybe you can spend more time figuring out the rest of the kids instead of being distracted. Oh the skit sounds like a fun thing to do. Of course I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE all of that stuff!

Love,
Bethie

How's the stud with the x-ray eyes doing? Is he any better now that his classmates knocked him down a peg?

So when is homecoming? What do they do up there to celebrate? Do they all ride their tractors to the football field or something?
Posted By: Trip Re: as a fashion icon - 09/18/08 08:42 PM
We don't have homecoming up here. What exactly does it mean? I know I have seen stuff in the movies about it but wonder about the significance.

Edited for a . instead of a ?
Posted By: fig Re: as a fashion icon - 09/18/08 08:42 PM
they actually do ride tractors to the football field and it doesn't even need to be homecoming for themt o do it

homecoming is next Friday
and
BB will be cheering with the cheerleaders and i will be video taping as Baboo needs to work

they do skits (yikes) and vote on king and queen and all that jazz

stud boy was there today but didn't try to stare me down (phew)

i got all my grading done

Posted By: fig Re: as a fashion icon - 09/19/08 05:46 PM
Question here

how do you handle a disagreement when it seems like no sides are listening?

i have a firm belief
a battle worth fighting for

and

the other person says they share that but are not showin git in actions

everytime i try to bring this up i am told i am testing our friendship

and

i guess i am
i mean
it's not a pop quiz
it was clearly laid out

but they get really defensive when i call them on it...when i question their actions

i am told that i am sayign oen thing and then another, which i don't feel but maybe i am

how do you resolve this sort of thing

in the past i would suck it up and hold it in or cut and run from the friendship

i don't WANT to do either

suggestions please????
Posted By: BethM Re: as a fashion icon - 09/19/08 06:39 PM
Well fig,

This can get dicey. The first thing I always ask myself is if this friendship is worth it. Some friendships are very 1 sided where there is no give and take, it's all give. At onetime I would have just gone along. I don't do this anymore. Life's just too darn short! If this person has a place in your heart and they feel the same, then they wouldn't want you to have to hold this in. I believe true friends want the best for us.

However there are many different levels of friendship, close, casual, acquaintances. If what is bothering you is going to destroy what you have with this person and they won't deal with it, I think I would try to get to the bottom of it or at least accept the limits of this friendship. Sometimes you just have to be willing to lose it all in order to be true to yourself.
Posted By: whapu Re: as a fashion icon - 09/19/08 07:52 PM
Thuggy,
I am going to shake my diluted head from side to side and see what comes out only because you have added and provided SOOOO much on my gasping thread. (hence no promises of divine wisdom here)
Quote:

Life tests each and every ones friendships daily. I have never understood this statement except for the fact that it always puts one on the defensive. All problems or disagreements survive and grow off darkness. When mouths are closed, darkness and suspicions grow. Clarity is the only ointment.

Quote:

Often times I find myself on the other side of this equation because I must have real problems in the cognitive area but what helps me with this conflict is knowing that I have to acheive clarity so if all avenues have been exhausted by trying to sift through all the details with the other individual go without resolution, then I say "How bout we sit on this for a couple of days and think about it and then we can talk about it with maybe some sort of resolution. I would hate to see anything like this stand in our way of our friendship"
That being said, my success rate (especially in my M)is about 50/50. Not great odds but something. I try to live by the rule that I don't know everything nor does the other person in front of me know everything. Then I have a pint of beer, mumble to a Replacements song and strum a few strings away from everyone.
Of course I come back to hurt feelings but I feel a little more clear headed.
So there you are....fragments of thought from my diluted head. I hope it helps figgy...peace on the pathways

i miss you

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

you have great wisom there

you and bethie both have given me lots to think about

i think that handling this correctly will be a great test for me

i think my beleifs make trying to hear what the other person is saying very difficult
and
their defensiveness pisses me off which makes me lash out

ugh

i need to stop this unhealthy cycle in me

i have serious issues when people get defensive and stop listening

it shuts me down

maybe writing it out
so i can see the consistencies for myself
will help me understand what is happening better

or at least give me something tangible

Posted By: Trip Re: as a fashion icon - 09/20/08 12:02 AM
Is what the other person trying to say going against your believes? because you say you think your beliefs make it hard to hear. So then maybe you just don't believe in the same thing and to have the friendship you both will just have to agree to disagree or not be friends on that level.

Posted By: lodo Re: as a fashion icon - 09/21/08 02:57 PM
hey fig,

not sure if you're still thinking through issue with friend, but here's my $.02.

You talk about them being defensive and how that makes you feel, but defensiveness isn't about you, it's about them. And it means they won't listen no matter what you say, until they're ready to listen. Most times it takes some kind of trigger of awareness for them, something they encounter in another context or a small, digestible thing you say, that opens them up to hear the rest of it.

Guess I'm saying, don't roll in with the 101st airborne division of reason, but think about how to make smaller steps towards the bigger discussion making sure there are plenty of opportunities to judge whether they are listening or shutting down. Sometimes it takes a while. And it also gives you the chance to hear them as well - something we often don't do when we're absolutely sure of our own opinions.

my perspective, fwiw, lodo
Posted By: fig Re: as a fashion icon - 09/22/08 12:27 AM
thanks for all the help guys

i am going to start writing stuff down and lodo...you are correct...it's hard to be objective when you are close to the subject matter

and

i was listening to some music today
and

the kids and i were singing this song at the top of our lungs and i realized that it is kind of an anthemn for all of us
There are places I remember all my life,
Though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain.
All these places have their moments
Of lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I loved them all.

And with all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these mem'ries lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
And I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life I loved you more.

And I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life I loved you more
In my life I loved you more

and because it is one of my favorite love songs
There are places I remember all my life,
Though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain.
All these places have their moments
Of lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I loved them all.

And with all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these mem'ries lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
And I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life I loved you more.

And I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life I loved you more
In my life I loved you more

and because i like this one too

Let's go down, together
3 AM tomorrow night
I'll take you over anything
Let's go out, together
Broad daylight in the street
I'll take you anywhere

Chorus:
Your music fills my car
Your voice breaks every time
I'm still wondering
If I know who you are
I hang on every line

Let's go down, together
Down by the old mainstream
I'll take you over anything
Let's go back in time 1959
I'll take you, Radio King

ok that is enough music for today

i'm off to listen to my high fidelity soundtrack

i love that stevie wonder song

Sorry, Figgy but I have to ask where I can contact this airborne division. I didn't even realize they existed and I could really use their help! Fodo, do tell.
I went to 2 shows this weekend since you were referencing music. Friday, saw the Stereophonics right near my house for those old late 80"s cheap door prices and they didn't let me down! Then on saturday saw Augustana, Maroon 5 and the Counting Crows. A good show being the strange lineup. It caused huge swells of disapproval in my homestead being back to back moments but I had to see Stereophonics and the Counting Crows...Anyway, I am babbling. I left a temperate cup of Cyber Bean steam to jostle you for the upcoming week...peace

so

i ended up looking about 50 pounds heavier and eyeless because the angle of my chin tilting down and how i had to hold my head made the frame of my glasses go right over myyeys

so you can't tell i have eyes

and
then
when i saw it and said ummmmm really

she said no
next

so i went and ate two cookies and cried

and

and
the oldest hardy cried in school yesterday because he didn't want to read outloud

How's your day going so far? How did the boys do yesterday?
I thought about them last night and hoped that yesterday was a better day for them.

So I'm going to an SNL halloween party. I'm going as Mary Katherine Gallagher. It was easy because I found a catholic school uniform at goodwill. Whadda' ya' think?

HAHAHA...the last SNL halloween was 4 years ago and I went as the ladies man. I made my girlfriend who always dresses like a like a Ho go as my skank. It didn't cost her a thing all she had to do was go to her closet!
