So

I went today and checked out my new school. Had to feel pretty good as the secretary gave me a big hug

and

the principal said that my phone interview was the most dynamic interview he has ever been involved with (including face to face) and by the 2nd question he had written down in big letters "HIRE THIS WOMAN!!!!!"

So that was nice

I got my class schedule and about crapped my pants

I am teaching everything outside of my comfort zone

grammar?!?!?!?!
journalism?!?!?!?!
Julius Ceaser?!?!?!?!

and

i have all different classes

which is different

like last year I taught 7 classes but there were really only 3 I needed to do prep for

this year I have no repeaters

so

every class is a new class

YIKES!!!!

this next month will be a mad scramble

but

the class sizes are tiny
like 50 in the whole class

which means it will be easy to get to know people

last night a neighbor stopped by with a cake to welcome us to the neighborhood

and

i moved all the boxes that are left to the porch
so it looks cleaner in the house

and

we went to the "mall" 75 miles away

it was a JCPenny and a Herberger

fer real

and

i might go into civilization withdrawal

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

Corona Light por favor!

Sounds like you have a great admin team! I hear ya on the prep. When do classes actually start? And do you mean each class of 7 total is "only" 50 students? YIKES!

Thank goodness for the Internets.

Civilization is only a click away.

Seems like journalism would be a natural for you. Do you get to make a paper or yearbook or something?

warm wishes

(((((((Ms fig)))))))

Am I surprised that you were met with such warmth and exuberance? Nope, not in the slightest. People get what they give and that is who you are.

As far as the classes go, you're a smart cookie. For you it will smooth sailing, and for your students, well they are in for the ride of their lives.

Now tha mall thing (for me anyway) would be scary!

Love you!

corona fer sher!!!

and

nope...50 students total for the whole class...

my largest class is 20 students!!!

so that is nice anyway

way better than 32 average (some had 36 some had 30 last year)

I will be in charge of the school paper. I am more of a creative type writer rather than a factual type writer...

we'll see how it goes
apparently I also have to host a weekly radio show?!?!?!?!?!

the teachers are all happy at this school and the only openings are due to retirements

and

they had no out of school suspensions in the last 2 years

i think it is one of those schools where when the teachers call home, the kids catch hellllllllll

Posted By: qoe100 Re: more ways to procrastinate - 08/25/08 10:13 PM
Figgy, you'll be fabulous no matter how you handle it and I'm sure you're the breath of fresh air that the school needs.

Now.......how far are you from Mall of America?
Posted By: brandnewday Re: more ways to procrastinate - 08/25/08 10:15 PM
Welcome to small Town living....

I moved to a Town like Mayberry in NH after living in Los Angeles.

Talk about culture shock!

Everybody knows everybody!!

The closest mall is an hour away.

But you will grow to love it!

Congratulations, you deserve this wonderful fresh start.

In another life I lived 5 miles from a town of 200. I cross countried skied to get grocries and meds at times in the winter, heated with wood, and could pee in my back yard without getting arrested (requirement for location). It was good.

Everybody did know everybody but outside of the Fire Dept I pretty much kept to myself. Nothing against the folks just did not have much in common. However it was a good life and lived it for a decade
Posted By: fig Re: more ways to procrastinate - 08/25/08 11:37 PM
you figgied!!!!

I grew up in a small town, out in the country

but that small town was a booming metropolis compared to here

here...
well...
you could pee in the backyard
even though I am in town

Jillybean...i used to live about 45 mins from MOA, then I moved to about an hour and a half

now I am roughly 3ish

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

i miss target
and
crisco was $7 a tub!!!

and

miracle whip is $6!!!

dayum

but the bacon and meat are cheaper

hey no hill

my parents still heat with wood
i will miss wood cutting time again this year
nuts!!!

i am not so keen on it after catching my hand in the splitter

yikes

Posted By: KarenMarieS Re: more ways to procrastinate - 08/26/08 05:12 AM
oh yea, I would too, does target.com not cut it?

Sounds like a great and challenging year ahead for you! yeah!!
you can do it, you can you can!!

Posted By: ernest88 Re: more ways to procrastinate - 08/26/08 10:00 AM
I lived up in the mountains..13 miles past the closest town, which had nothing. 45 miles from the nearest "big" town..malls and such. 52 miles from where I worked. Drove 104 miles a day.

It was beautiful. At times it was treacherous. (snow)

The only good thing? I could pee in my yard. No neighbors. I don't miss it.

Oh Sweetie,

You'll figure it out, you always do. Aren't the first few days pretty layed back and a period of adjustment all around anyway?

How do the boys like their new school? What about the little angel? How is she adjusting? How about sweet mr BH? Is he liking his job?

Give everybody a big hug for me. I love you guys!

I'll write more later. Trying to make the rounds and then out to meet people for dinner!

Bethie

Hope you had a great dinner sunshine!!!

My wonderful baboo is still wonderful. He is in training 12 hours a day this week and next so that is pretty sucky for him.

the boys are getting more and more excited for school (and a little nervous too)

BB and I are adjusting to each other
there can be only one alpha female in the house and that is me sister!!! I am trying to grow some extra patience and understanding.

I will hug everyone...twice

we are eagerly awaiting your visit.

I will invite over Mr. Tortured-Ethan-Hawk-Band-Teacher.

I remember my school, it didn't matter what the teacher did to you, it was only important that they didn't call home because no matter what they did to you in scool it was minor compaired to what happened when you got home.

How goes it fig? I don't suppose you're thinking of comming up for WMSTR this weekend are you?

Woo Hoo!
Posted By: BarbieDoll Re: more ways to procrastinate - 08/29/08 02:31 PM
Morning Fig:

$1.05???? Atta girl!!! I LOVE bargoons! I love turning trash to treasure. I have so many decorating books on Shabby Chic. It is amazing how you can decorate on a budget. I read these books and cut out pictures over and over again. I'll bet you turn your home into a wonderful place in no time.

I'm not totaly up to date here but does BH have a daughter who is living with you? Hmmm - girls are much different than boys. Just ask me who got one 6.5 years after raising only boys. She has been a challenge for sure! I love her to death but she is more like me than ME! And that makes for its difficulties.

Anyway, thinking of you and your little ones (kitties included). I read with astonishment that you had classes of 50! WOW! I'm not sure I could maintain any sense of order. At the dance school we pretty much max at 15 and then we also have an assistant in the room. With little ones - sometimes 2 assistants. But school is different.

Good luck. Have a great w/e!

i am a flea market queen

bh's daughter is with us and it is definately different than having boys

i am more tomboyish too so all this girly stuff is super foreign to me

siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

the whole graduating class is 50...my classes are more like 20. Last year I had a class with around 40 kids and that was nuts

it was creative writing
my baby
and i loved it so the students did too

i could never do 50...that would be like a college science type class...yikes

i hate crowds and would probably pass out

seems strange that a hermitty shy person like me would be a teacher, huh?

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I'll be at my parents house this weekend. I promised the boys I would take them to see grammy and grandpa

another weekend for sure

So no worries.

I went to sign a pass for someone today and had to rip it up as i dripped all over it

my the kids are impressed

and

today

i won over my journalism class

i accidentally swore

and

they had an assignment where they had to look through my bag and ask a questiona dn then write an article about me

i thought I cleaned out all my "girl" stuff but
there it was
tampon
so i ditched it in the garbage without missing a beat and the kids thought I was hysterical

I bet it is so much fun. I bet it's a blast.
Posted By: fig Re: more ways to procrastinate - 09/04/08 04:46 PM
well..

its always intersting!!!!

i happen to be a little spazzy and i can't seem to stay on topic

i'm sure they have drugs for that but it keeps the kids on their toes

and.....

i got my first request out

one of the boys said to me "since I'm hot can I get a little leeway on this assignment?"

and

i said
"if I found HS boys hot...which is pretty impossible since boys are gross and men are where its at...I would totally say yes but I think boys are nasty so nope...no leeway."

then he said
"if I said you were hot could I get some leeway?"
and
i said

shameless flattery will get you everywhere
ingenuity will get you further so yes...some leeway...instead of -5 points, I will give you -4!!!!

then he said I was cool and asked if I wanted to go fishing with him sometimes

(awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww)

I said
heck no
boys are gross

Was watching a video last night of some renovations being done to an Irish pub in Vancouver. It has since opened but anyhow, the floor in the new place is made from the wood of Guinness casks sent in from Ireland. He has also brought in authentic and original Guinness bar accessories. Can't wait to go and check it out.

When are you guys getting here???

Don't you love how you can use Fandango even when it comes to moving?

Do you think that the Fandango movie ticket peeps will sue me?

Flava up or down? Why change a great thing? I think Figgy's exactly what this town needs.

so today...

one of my students said (as I walked by and they thought i was out of earshot...but I am a mom so i can hear my kids 5 miles away whisper about something with their buddies)

anyway

one of my students says to the little group she was with...

Gosh...Ms Figgy is so cute. She always looks like she came off some tv show!!!

and
the other one says

"yeah like that sex in the city show!!!"

OK
just to let uyou all in on something
i am wearing a little balck swing type babydoll dress, peterpan color, black tights
black velvet mario valentino flats and 3 super long necklaces (almost to hte hemline on my dress)
i have a headband in with my hair caught in a low pony

so
sex in the city i am surely not
but i also didn't buy my clothes at Walmart ()

i think its funny that i am their culture

but it was also nice for my vanity to hear that I am cute

usually i hear
odd
or off
or
strange
or weird
or
or
or

cute I can live with

i feel so "big city"

you sound more like a cute flapper chick today!
Posted By: BigHands Re: more ways to procrastinate - 09/11/08 02:16 PM
Or a gorgeous, blonding hottie.

Ask figgy about her changing hair colors.
Posted By: *KS*Chick* Re: more ways to procrastinate - 09/11/08 02:18 PM
What's this - hair colah changing?

DO TELL!
Posted By: Was2sad Re: more ways to procrastinate - 09/11/08 03:00 PM
"hair colors" .... as in plural?

Is that like when the leaves of New England change in the fall?

figgy, is this to become an annual event?

Are people going to start planning their driving vacations around it?

I see a photo cover shoot coming to news stands in our area soon.

And I want my copy autographed ..... paleeeeeez!

Sounds like you are enjoying this burst of fashion almost as much as the kids. School is so different, and better today than when I was young. Seems there were stiff rules about how teachers had to dress, imposed by stiff administrators.

I think kids want to learn, and do learn more easily from adults who are not stiff. I'm sure your class is having a great day today, and are oblivious to the fact that you are sneaking knowledge into their bouncy little heads at this very moment. \:\)

great stuff !
