I don't usually get a pissed-off response. I used this on Monday and it was well-received--"XXX sounds no fun. I'm sorry you're feeling YYY. You're usually very ZZZ. <Insert 3x I noticed them being ZZZ>."

Like wayfarer, I cringe a bit at "I'm sorry you're feeling YYY." There are better phrases. Sometimes I'm lazy. I did see their perspective, recognize how they feel, and communicate it back to them.
