Eureka - Figured out how to restore posts

The OP posted something, but his post is empty. What's really odd is you can click on Quick Quote (but not Quote) and it "reappears". I did that and replied, and my reply is empty as well.

I then copied and pasted the text into a reply and that is also empty.

Then I replied again and removed the quote code, but it's still empty. So then I replied and simply typed Testing. That showed up.

Those people having disappeared posts need to remove contractions with the symbol that makes it a contraction!!!

Cadet,

The disappearing post issue is related to character sets. UBB doesn't seem to be enforcing a specific character encoding, so it's using whatever the author happens to have on their device.

There are multiple "character sets" and different devices have different standards. I'm currently typing on a mac and with this site, the default representation of quotations are vertical single quotes and double quotes -- ' and ".

Those work fine.

If I author on my iPad, the default representation of these characters are "curly quotes" meaning that the left quote and right quote are different, with angles.

Those "curly quotes" cause posts to appear blank. I tried eliminating all the quotes from a problematic post but it was still posting blank from an iPad, so I'm guessing the comma character encoding or some other punctuation may be an issue.

Microsoft Word also uses curly quotes which is why people are reporting that cut and paste from Word causes it to disappear.

I would be that if you author in Notepad and cut and paste you'll have no problem.

Probably worth some research on character set support (or enforcement) with the bulletin board engine you're using.

The main problem is contractions when made from a device other than a desktop or laptop computer although I agree with what ACC wrote above also.

It seems to be a common occurrence with Apple products based on several of the posts above and my own experience with my first attempt at a post here. I am using a Mac desktop and I experienced the disappearing issue. I just have to remember to not use apostrophes and quotes when posting!

Yes - we need an upgrade on our forum software but so far it has not been done.

Hopefully at some point on the future this will be resolved

Cadet, just wanted to recognize you and say thank you for your tireless efforts related to this issue! I know you've been hard at work restoring posts, even when the poster doesn't remember to heed the advice in this thread.

So a big thank you for all of your efforts!

Your welcome.

Now if I could figure out how to get them to read this thread.

I might have to put it in my Welcome Post.

Hopefully this thread is now obsolete with the new forum software.

Also the edit button is working for 10 mins per post.

PLEASE do not abuse this function and stick with the TOS as that is the reason that it was eliminated in the past.
